I think you may well be right. The similarity is striking. AR wrote the introduction to Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World" for the Mariner's Library edition. The Mariner's Library series were produced by Cape and AR was Editior-in-Chief and wrote several of the forewords, but I am not sure of the date of the first.
