I just got Roger's joke about the "small black buoy".

It is amazing how much gets lost in the translation, and by this, I mean from UK English to USA English. For the first time, by saying this phrase using the UK version of pronunciation, I FINALLY GOT IT! The problem was that using the USA pronunciation, there was no joke. I never realized there was one there. You see, here, the word "buoy" has a sound like BOOEY, whereas the UK pronunciation calls it "BOY". So by my calling it BOOEY, there was no joke.

I wonder how such a "joke" manages when translated into some other quite different language. Probably totally lost completely.

The things one learns on this forum, even after many years of careful reading and study of these dear stories, or even after having TYPED in all of these, and THAT really takes close attention to each word, to each punctuation mark.

I am looking forward to more discoveries and to learning more about Ransome, his life, his works, and those favorite childhood playmates of my youth, his beloved characters in his stories. Teach me. There is still much to be discovered among his mysteries.
