I am teaching a survey class in these first two weeks in January. Today was the first day of class. I gave them an assignment straight out of SW. Each group of 4 had to take the SW plan with all the bearings on the plan and turn the plan into an AutoCAD drawing. There are 60 students in the class. One is an Eagle Scout. He told me it was a hard assignment as the plan wsa hard to read. The students identified two problems with the survey. The bearing with the word "dyke" as annotation does not have a bearing. This bearing is required to complete the survey along the eastern shore. The ES compared the line to othe lines and determined a bearing, another group scaled a length. I have most of the plans and I will enjoy comparing the results.

The main comments from the class were:
1. He made a lot of mistakes
2. Should learn to write neatly
3. Why not give a few lengths
4. The survey closed quite accurately
5. Ring the surveyor up an get him to fix it (sounds like our talk on editing)
6. Where did I get such a devilish problem and is the rest of a 3rd year class at TAMU going to be this hard?

Most of them learned a bit.
