I 'see' the allegory more now than when I read the books as a young teenager.
One of my favorite childhood series was All-Of-A-Kind-Family, which was about Jewish immigrant families in New York. (there were 5 girl children- hence the title) The books were a nice introduction to Judaism, as well as being good reads.
