My other Internet community is the Gunroom (www.hmssurprise.org) an email list which discusses Patrick O'Brian (and everything else).

Other similarities include losing a parent when quite young, having Rpert Hart-Davis as a friend and/or publisher. In fact O'Brian in a couple of early books, published by Hart-Davis, set around Commodore Anson's circumnavigation (The Golden Ocean and The Unknown Shore) featured a large hairy older midshipman called Ransome with a weakness for puns and bad jokes. I have always wondered if Ransome and O'Brian met at Hart-Davis and O'Brian adopted Ransome's name and some of his characteristics.
