Rather before our period, in 1908, there were two postal deliveries per day in Coniston. At the North end of the Lake these were at 8 am and 4 pm with a collection at 6.30 pm. I imagine this would have been replicated elsewhere in the valley.
The morning letters and parcels arrived at Windermere by train then on to Ambleside by cart. The Coniston post was collected by Coniston's own Royal Mail postmen in a simple cart that arrived in the village at about 7 am. I think that the afternoon service came to Coniston station, certainly after the Great War all the post came from Barrow by railway.
We only have one delivery a day now which is routed via Troutbeck Bridge, but as with most rural areas, this can hardly be economically viable for the Royal Mail and is a darn sight better than in most other countries, so I for one am thankful for what we have!
