I felt that the driver for Mrs. Blackett and Capt. Flint was fear- the GA had established a reign of terror in their childhood, and they were still subject to it. I think that the GA knows this and takes full advantage.

Two things are missing from our analysis so far:

(1) The GA acts in a proprietorial manner at Beckfoot. There is a row about the daisies and the Amazons are ordered to cut the Beckfoot lawns. Presumably Mrs Blackett cannot afford to pay someone to do this for her. So is the GA the owner of Beckfoot?

(2) No matter how much hope and fear you employed there is no way that todays youngsters would let a modern GA order them about. Follow the link below to see what happened when a girl was made to do the washing up. No, there is a lingering Edwardian sense of propriety at Beckfoot with respect to the GA's position which she milks for all that it's worth.
