No, we don't all have to fit into any of those descriptions. A great number of people fit into one or several of them, but there are others.

The only pejorative one is 'peasant', in the context in which I described it. There are few genuine peasants left in western Europe anyway, and that's not what the pejorative use means any more. Basically it just means underclass. As I said, nobody with any decency or style would use it.

As for 'bourgeois' there's nothing derogatory about it at all, unless you are an unreconstructed Marxist from way back- or a cool cat who hasn't yet left college. I don't suppose that either of us fits that... One of my proudest moments was when I heard that, at her local Comprehensive school, aged 12, my daughter's class were asked about their family, and she said 'We are members of the bourgeoisie'. That's my girl! Spot accurate. Her class mates were gobsmacked. The teacher told us later that it had been one of the small highlights of the term.

And of course we tarboarders are an altogether nicer sort of person. I'm surprised that the question could ever be posed...
