Rural property values in the 1930's were considerably lower, both relative to wages and other items such as groceries.
The fashion for 'second homes' was only just begining. The 'ribbon development of 'summer houses' along the River Thurne was one result.
Some families, of course, had more solid 'second homes'. The Crossley's at Huyton Hill on the shores of Lake Windermere immediately spring to mind.
