On the West coast of Ireland, wind speeds can reach up to 130 m.p.h.+_ directly off the Atlantic and they still have thatched roofs. The thatch is held down by ropes with a large stone suspended at each end.

Thatch was a cheap roofing material and the ropes/stones retention system is a cheap and effective solution.
