Your trouble will be that going to the Lakes in January you may not find the Coniston Launch running. But certainly go along the East side of Coniston Lake through Nibthwaite where Ransome spent his childhood holidays and get a view of the island. But also try and stay with Lucy Batty at Bank Ground Farm on Coniston which is where Swallows & Amazons book begins. Tel: 015394 41264. You will get a very warm welcome. There are two centres with Ransome interests but I am pretty sure that the Windermere Steamboat Museum will be closed. There you can see the Amazon and Cocki Bondhu are exhibited. In Kendal at the Abbot Hall Museum there is the Ransome Room which is worth visiting, and I think you will find this open. Its a shame you are coming in January!
