And by no mean humourless: see for example GN p. 147 where Susan and
Peggy persuade the sailor from the Pterodactyl that as
mere ship's cooks, they couldn't possibly understand charts "with
figures all over the place". Roger's reaction ("Gosh! I wish I'd been
there.") seems to me to show envy of and astonishment at his sister's
powers of deceit and deadpan humour rather than (as John assumes) conceit
that he could have done better.
