If you look carefully at old newsreels of the big freeze of 1947-48, you can see POWs in their Wehrmacht forage caps shovelling the snow.

It seems that we treated 'enemy combatants' more humanely during WWII.

Many served with distinction in the RAF during the war and afterwards many chose to stay.

Polish pilots played a pivotal role in the Battle of Britain. But for most the 'choice' of what to do after the war had been made by Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill at the Tehran and Yalta conferences when the borders of Poland were first adjustd and then their homeland was handed over to the Soviets 'sphere of influence'.
