Thanks Peter - I was getting my cultural heritages mixed up. It is what happens when John gets into the conversation with the down under point of view.

Did a scan for "Marmite" and (no surprise) there was no hit anywhere in the twelve books. So much for Vegemite or Marmite.

In fact, there was no hit on "peanut butter" either.

By the way, this tarboard forum is truly a Ransome fan's treasure. For so meny years, I felt I was the only person that had ever heard of these stories. The "oddities" were left unexplained. Then finally, I find there is this collection of people that are like me in that they appreciate these stories and have actually read them. It is as I find that there are new friends and they are from all over the world, with a wealth of cultural backgrounds and experiences that has done so much to enhance my appreciation and my understanding of these treasures from my youth. My "oddities" are not such to others, but ordinary every day concepts. Their sharing with me the explanations of this other land, this other way of life, this other time, all this has given me much wealth from these childhood friends of mine. I thank you all. Perhaps I should say, "Three cheers for Tarboard."
