I agree with Ed, except that I usually associate 'plunk'with denser, noisier objects than 'plop.' Vases and plates and stacks of bound journals plunk; cushions and the stuff that was on the plates plop. However, here's my 1936 dictionary: "To drop or sink down suddenly or heavily; plump. To throw, push or drive heavily or suddenly, as to plunk down a dollar."
