For water at our bach (beach house), we mainly use rain water collected from the roof which is stored in a large tank buried underground. This is supplemented by ground water from a sand trap (or bore) - being on sand we don't need a full well.

Water from the tank or the bore are pumped up in to a small header tank in the roof space (and into the hot water cylinder, also in the roof space). These tanks then feed the taps, shower, toilet, etc by utilising gravity.

In the early days, before we had electricity, someone had to remember to hand pump water up to the header tank at regular intervals. Now the electric pumps cut in automatically as required.

I know nothing about old English or Lake District houses but I imagine that the method we use is fairly universal and should also work when taking water from a beck or river. It is therefore offered as yet another Beckfoot possibility.

The bach also has a 'tin roof' - who would want to sleep through such a wonderful storm that it made that much noise on the roof? Although we are usually there on holiday in summer - I suppose my view might change if I lived there year round.
