My grandparents employed a live-in maid before WW2, my grandfather was a family doctor in a small Somerset town, having retired from the Indian Medical service.

After the war they had a cleaning lady, Mrs Woodley. When she "retired" I can remember that she still used to come down once a week and chat with my grandmother and sometimes do small odd jobs around the house. I suppose it was my grandparents way of supplementing her old age pension without making her feel that she was a charity case.
