Just to point out from here in Toronto which lies in the same latitude as the South of France, that the only part of the USA that lies at the same latitude as Northen England is the very bottom of the Alaska panhandle. The "Lower 48" states end at the 49th parallel (about the latitude of Paris) except where Canada comes a bit further south as in southern Ontario.

The rest of the North American continent in those latitudes is Canada where it does get a lot colder than the north of England. James Bay, the bit of sea that comes south at the southern end of Hudson Bay, freezes over every year and that lies at the same latitudes as Norhern England.

Robert Dilley lives on the north western shore of Lake Superior in the bottom left. I live out of the picture to the south. The Gulf of St Lawrence can be seen to the right.
