JMN has been rather out-voted on this one, but I'll come to his aid. Maybe it is a bit surprising that the A's and D's had a dip in the river, rather than the lake. It occurs to me that the water on the shallow bit near the promontory might have been a degree or two warmer than the river, which would have contained water freshly down from the cold night-time fells. The lake water, on the other hand, would have a consistent summer temperature.
