It also reminds us how important fishing was to AR. After all it was what he described as his politics when questioned by the UK authorities. This answer was "cheeky", but perhaps not without a substantial grain of truth - for AR the most important philosophy or social agenda was fishing.

In terms of the twelve SA books, then, an important element in terms of who are the heroes are who are the fishermen. One could make out a case that on this basis the heroes are Roger and Pete.

Finally, I have obtained a copy of the DVD of the Michael Hordern television production of Rod and Line, which I don't think was ever shown in Australia. It is a delight and I recommend it to all TARS and Tarboarders, especially those who, like me, are not fishermen (I can't stand fishing actually and found nothing so trying as being taught to cast flies - but maybe it would have been better with AR or CF as the teacher).
