While a contemporary midden is nothing much to crow about, an archaic one is one of the most valuable artefact piles an archaeologist can stumble across as it gives a real window into life of the time and often the layers show the changes in succeeding generation's circumstances such as diet and the value of what is thrown out. Very underestimated are middens.
