Adam's posting missed only two items that i think are important to remember about Childers:
1. His interest in Irish matters commenced when he married - his wife was a member of a prominent Boston Irish family who had definite home rule/independence views.
2. He was a man who, when he held a view tended to hold it wholeheartedly - when he came to support Home Rule, he ended up being a partisan of Michael Collins and disapproved of de Valera's compromise in creating the Irish Free State. He was executed for treason by the Free State because of this partisan position.
