Even if the Swallows and Amazons on holiday are reluctant to take up school work - an understandable reluctance - it is clear that their general knowledge gained from experience and school far surpasses what the average child of similar means today would have. How many schools still offer Latin to young children or require the memorization of poetry? I don't think the books play down an education that Ransome would have taken for granted but makes a good case for the holidays being just as important and much more fun.
