Humour is laughing at your Uncle after he mistaken eats a dog biscuit.
Cruelty is telling the story every Christmas for 30 years.

Ok, he ate the whole packet, but it was only a 5 lb box.

Roger is told not to be cheeky, again what is cheeky?

I reckon Susan is about 11. I think an 11 yr old like my daughter could do what she did if she had been trained properly. Remember in the '30 kids stated work at the end of year 6 = 12 years old. You could start University at 16.

In the second world war the US Army had to first fix the lack of high school education to allow the war to be run properly.

Children in those days lived where the average life expectancy was 45-50. So three generations had 15 years each, before they were all dead. Some lived to 80, but a lot died young. Now we have people having babies at 50. So I suggest it is all relative to your age, who is still alive, and how society treats you.
