Poor lady - she sounds as though she had a lot of ego to hold onto as well as having elected herself the reading police. If being seen reading a child's book was so damaging I really pity her.
As to the audience, I wonder how many laughed just because they were there - the sheep effect? And I wonder how many had actually read a Harry Potter?
Certainly some children's writing is tripe and even the best needs to be read sparingly, just like any other material.A complete diet of fashion magazines, computing programmes or in my case, Elizabeth Peters archaeological who-dunnits, can not only pall but limit your perspective severely.
