There's plenty of people who don't support the Linda Smith view.
In 2001 I had a very long commute to work by train. My daughter had given me the latest Harry Potter for my birthday, and I took it on the train to read.
One evening I was in a compartment on the way home with two other men, probably in their 40s. After we had sat in (very British) silence for about 75 minutes, one of them went out into the corridor. At which the remaining one looked up and said, "How far have you got?"

The scandal that nobody mentioned about the early paperback for adults (with an American Hogwarts Express on the cover) was that it cost £1 more than the children's edition.
