A sentry,when on duty, is on sentry-go. I did a lot of it in my National Service. I never knew it was a rare word.
And as Hilary points out, it was already in use in Victorian times. (And for those of you who don't know the song, note that the emphasis in 'exercises of his brains' is on 'of'.
