One of my few times at "messing around in boats" (living most of my life in Dead Center, USofA doesn't give one much opportunity for "real" boats) was when I was about 12, when I had first read the series. We lived in Enid, Oklahoma and my father had broken his leg and was in the hospital in traction for six weeks. I would go down and visit him and afterward go accross the street to the little lake in Government Springs Park and rent an aluminum rowboat and row around this tiny lake for a couple of hours. I pretended I was the entire S&A group with their boats! The elderly fringe bearded and nautical hatted gentleman who rented the boats, whom I would pretend was Peter Duck, usually would let me row for much over the alloted half hour for twenty five cents - I think he figured that someone should at least be out there rowing to attract others. I spent the entire summer doing this. Not the most exciting boat experience, but very meaningful to a wide eyed 12 year old misplanted New Yorker.
