It takes all sorts, for me books are the means by which Ransome's words get into my mind. I am quite happy reading a battered Puffin paperback or a brand new hardback as a first edition.

However, I read Brogan's biography of AR recently and he mentioned several letters in which AR was discussing whether the paper set aside by the publishers for P&M would be better used in reprinting some of his earlier (and in Evgenia's opinion) better books. Presumably even in wartime there was a reasonable ration of paper for the printing of new books issued to each publishing house or printer. After all keeping up morale in wartime depended on such things.
