Frankly, I suspect that a good deal of John's characteristic sense of responsibility might have come from his being the eldest child, aside from gender. If Mum had been training him to be responsible, then perhaps it "took." And even without intentional training on her part, an eldest of five would usually take on a sense of leadership.

Who knows, Roger might have taken on some of the same outlook if he had had to grow up and be the "man of the house" while his dad was gone.
