Mike has brought up an interesting question as to what first drew Ransomites to read his books. For me, scanning the shelves of the children's section at the library on my way home from a hated school, it was the dustcover with its wonderful snippets of finely drawn pictures - most unlike the other boring dustcovers around them.
I have no recollection of which I read first but the lake and its inhabitants was such an escape I came back again and again to read the rest.
I saw the reissue of all the hardcover books in the UK and there again were those wonderful dustcovers. Too heavy to bring back then, but oneday...
