S & A was an accidental find for me also. I was given the wonderful opportunity of combing shelves and shelves of books (left over after a local library had closed) in order to take whatever I wanted. Of course, I was not the first to do so, quite the opposite, in fact, but I discovered buried treasure. During two searches, I found books that I otherwise would probably not have read, including Swallows and Amazons.* Unfortunately, I was almost 40 years old at the time. I don't think the age diminished my delight, but I wish I could have found the series sooner -- to have more years in which to enjoy them all!
* Just in case anyone is interested, I also discovered Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come and Cart and Cwidder at the same time.
