What a great article with some real insight into AR from the Altounyan perspective. I love that she says Susan was made 'unaturally motherly and priggish', possibly because it reflects my own belief.
Certainly although Swallows & Amazons was likely initially inspired by watching the Altounyan children (plus his own childhood experiences), I feel it shows that AR thought of them less as he got better acquainted with 'his' characters.
