In PP the Swallows are camping at Beckfoot for two weeks (until Mrs Walker comes to Holly Howe) as Mrs Jackson has visitors. So they do not have Swallow until then.
And at the end of PP Colonel Jolys’s firefighters turn up in motor cars - there are dozens of motor horns - so cars are reasonably common!
