I agree, Adam, that the inclination of Beckfoot does vary in earlier maps. However that only detailed map, included within the text of PM,does show this aspect of Beckfoot facing North. Presumably AR took more care with a detailed map?
The house next door to us does grow roses on a trellis on the North wall. I know that it is North as I have confirmed this separately. We have a very successful fig tree growing on the north west corner of our house. I suspect it is more a question of picking the correct variety to grow in a shadier situation.
