This is reviving a post by Owen Roberts on 22nd May. I've just been to the Museum of Lakeland Life, and had the chance to look at AR's original drawing of this picture. This is much crisper than the published version, with far cleaner lines, and the layout of the drawing looked quite clear to me. The thwarts are perhaps slightly too vertical compared to the hull, but they could be correct if Swallow is heeling over, as it would be.
The question from this might be therefore, how were AR's original drawings trasnferred to blocks for the printers? I would say in this example that the quality deteriorated in this process, or perhaps in printing on matt paper where the ink would bleed.
