who were the Coniston Tigers?

"After a thorough grounding on the Lakeland fells as a teenager, I started rock climbing just over 70 years ago and two years later nine of us formed the Coniston Tigers, a tiny unofficial climbing group with our own rough hut on the shore of Coniston Water. Here, for many years, before and after the second world war, we spent our weekends, using the hut as our base for the climbs on Dow Crag, Gimmer Crag in Langdale or the Wasdale crags, and every year we went north to the Scottish snows. "
