Its just that in the UK spellings from American English (spoken by people from the USA) are dismissed as nothing more than ignorance, to be laughed at and avoided at all costs.

The above generalisation, in my experience, simply is not true. Mike - if you are going to make a statement like that, could you produce some evidence for it? Or should we not let facts get in the way of a good story?
