And in New England (especially Boston) "Yankee" has the even more specific meaning of someone whose ancestors came from Great Britain a long time ago, at the very least before 1776. My father, son of an Italian immigrant to Boston, was appalled when he first went to Missisippi (with the Army Air Corps during WW2) and heard the locals there refer to him as a Yankee!
