I second that. John's OED extracts are magnificent, but tend to give us a little bit more info than we actually need.

BTW on the ever-present railway theme, when I was at Coniston recently, I slept in the old booking office of Torver Station (Furness Railway). It has now been converted into a 'holiday cottage'. The ticket-issuing hatch, with its wooden frames and shutter, is still in place.
