A couple of years ago the BBC re-ran the Rainhill trials with replicas of the original three engines.

Novelty was hopeless. Sanspareil didn't do badly - only marginally worse performance than Rocket, and Rocket's fire clinkered seriously. A bit of bad luck for the Stephensons and good luck for Hackworth in 1830 and quite a complicated situation could have arisen.

To bring the topic back home, didn't Ransome have a relation who attended Mr Huskisson when he was mortally wounded at the opening of the L & M?
