The depth of water around Peel Island can vary depending on the recent rain - or lack of it. High water levels during the year are up to six feet higher than the lowest levels. At the moment levels are quite low, the other day a Mystic electric launch got well and truly stuck off the southern end. The occupants sorted it out by leaping overboard onto the shelf, then giving a good shove while clambering aboard again!

For the same reason the landing place, although admittedly small, becomes much larger when the lake is low. Note the large size of it in the feature film of Swallows and Amazons - this was filmed in April/May 1973.
