The Port of Lowestoft and about 25% of all the other UK ports have just been sold to an international consortium. Many of these ports were originally owned by the railway companies and were wonderful examples of integrated rail-sea transhipment. These days, thanks to the absence of any rational government transport policy, the motor lorry reigns supreme.
