I don't think the Callums would have sent Dorothea to a day school if Dick was at a boarding school.

I think it was fairly common, although not universal, to send boys off to boarding school, but to keep daughters at home. If Professor Callum was an egyptologist at the University, then they might have lived within easy distance of college, and of Euston station nearby; nicely placed to put Dorothea on the train. And even at a day school, she would have had to produce a certificate (as in WH) saying she hadn't been in contact with infectious disease during the holidays- I know my parents had to produce one for me. And in those pre-penicillin days infectious disease was a great deal more threatening than it is now.

However... If the prof's work took him abroad a great deal of the time, and his wife went with him, then having Dot at boarding school would reduce the disruption to her education.

Certainly when Mrs Dixon is talking about it to Mrs Blackett and says "they'll be better off with me than in any school" (JC. 1948, p.119) there's a strong implication that Dot is a boarder too.
