Many schools, especially in rural areas like Norfolk, have weekly boarders - my daughter while in the 6th Form of a school near Norwich stayed from Monday until Friday and came home for the weekends. It cut out a very long and tiring daily journey. Tom might have gone to such a school.

On the other hand I went for three years as a day pupil to a school with lessons on Saturday morning and rugby - which I hated - on Saturday afternoon. Moving to a school with a five day week was one of the great liberating moments of my life, especially as I went sailing almost every Saturday instead.
