The text in WH says 'the fifteen' - not 'the first fifteen', so it doesn't necessarily mean that John was in the top year.
On the football (soccer) v rugby (rugger) topic - Buckeridge's Jennings very definately plays the eleven-a-side game at his preparatory school - he is perennially eleven I believe?
In Enid Blyton's 'St Clares' series the girls are thirteen/fourteen in the First Form.
