I doubt if AR would have considered Rugby League. Although he came from the north he did go to Rugby School. Rugby School always had the strongest links with Rugby Union. As the England Rugby team played in the same colours as the Rugby School team - which predated the England side, at the start of each season the Captain of England would have to write to the Captain of the Rugby team to ask permission to wear their colours.
Rugby League has always been a professional game and was looked down upon those who played sport to work up a good thirst for beer.
I do not know of any boarding schools that played rugby league in the 1930's.
However you are quite right that rugby league originally comprised 15 players a side, it was reduced to 13 about 1906 - well before that assumed date of WH.
