Rilla is interesting, especially as LMM took on a topic(abandoned children) that was not common then. Of course Anne was her original unwanted child but Jims' origin was more unpleasant and his eventual resolution meant a lessening of the 'happy ever after' Mongomery loved. I didn't read it until I was an adult so I suppose it appealed - it's certainly not of interest to most children the way Anne can be, but the 'homefront' experiences of WW1 are certainly valid and memorable.
