I think village schooling finished at any age from 12 onwards, and most schools were affiliated to the local church, providing plenty of religious education as well as the three R's.

Something else that has puzzled me (not sure if this warrants a new thread) is that in Missee Lee, John has forgotten most of his Latin, whereas Roger is still studying it. Does this mean John has given up Latin to specialise in other subjects (for his School Certificate???). Daisy chats about School Certificates when they have tea with the natives in WD. At what age would children start to study for their School Certificate?
