Whizzing down hill at 40 mph is as bad as gybing downwind in a northerly wind blowing onto a lee shore, you might have to do it, but you don't have to like it. At that speed stopping on a brick wall will generate about 200 g's or enough to kill you from the shock waves. Teaching a kid to wear a helmut is not a bad idea, I mean some-one taught Roger to wear shoes and watch out for snakes.
I spent many days sailing happily by myself, always wore a life jacket just in case in a dinghy.
